ABIDE Prayer: God’s Greatness

The purpose of ABIDE is to seek God through prayer, rely on the Spirit as we gather together, and pray with unity and purpose. ABIDE prayers are Scripture-led and Spirit-focused prayers.

“The Lord is great and is highly praised; his greatness is unsearchable. One generation will declare your works to the next and will proclaim your mighty acts. …I will declare your greatness.” (Psalm 145:3-4,6b)

Remember the old, familiar prayer that began with a powerful truth, “God is great, God is good…”? Every day we have a choice in how we choose to view God amidst the challenges and problems we face.  Only when we are able to see our problems in the light of the goodness and greatness of our God will we have the confidence to move unwavering against the challenges we face in courage, commitment and faith. In this week’s ABIDE, let’s pause and set our gaze above our current circumstances and view any problems we have encountered this week through the lens of God’s greatness.

Prayers of Praise

“Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all.” (1 Chronicles 29:11

Prayer:  Lord, you are great, and I am in awe of your power and glory. Everything belongs to you and I exalt you as head over ___________.  (Fill in the blank with anything specific to your circumstances that the Lord brings to mind. Take time to declare praise to God for His greatness.)

Prayers of Acknowledgement

“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and great in faithful love. The Lord is good to everyone; his compassion rests on all he has made.” (Psalm 145:8-9)

Prayer: God, You are gracious and compassionate.  I choose to trust in your unconditional love for me and know that everything you allow in my life is for my good and your glory.  I want to remember & acknowledge your compassion in my life. (Ask the Lord to bring to mind examples of His compassion.)

Prayers of Confession

“The Lord helps all who fall; he raises up all who are oppressed. All eyes look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.” (Psalm 145:14-16)

Prayer: Father, I have fallen & felt burdened in one way or another many times.  I confess that I haven’t always sought you first for comfort & help. Please forgive me.  Today, I look to you for support & provision; I trust You to satisfy all my needs in your perfect timing.

Prayers for Help

“The Lord is near all who call out to him, all who call out to him with integrity. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry for help and saves them.” (Psalm 145:18-19)

Prayer:  Jesus, I know you are near; I know that in your presence is where I /we find peace.  I cry out to you today on behalf of ____________.  Thank you that you hear me and will answer. (Fill in the blank with specific personal needs or the needs of others.)

“Power and might are in your hand, and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all. Now therefore, our God, we give you thanks and praise your glorious name.” (1 Chronicles 29:12b-13)

Closing Prayer:  Lord, there is none greater than you.  Thank you for the power and strength you make available to me every day through the indwelling of your Holy Spirit.  I am more than a conqueror in any and every situation; because, greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4) Jesus, be exalted in my life and in my circumstances.
