ABIDE Prayer: God Our Rescuer
The purpose of ABIDE is to seek God through prayer, rely on the Spirit as we gather together, and pray with unity and purpose. ABIDE prayers are Scripture-led and Spirit-focused prayers.
“I love you, LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek refuge.” (Psalm 18:1-2)
David spoke the words of this song on the day when the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. If we’re honest, there probably isn’t a day that goes by that we do not need our Heavenly Father to rescue us from something or someone – even ourselves! Perhaps you need Him to rescue you from fear, negative thoughts, anger, sickness, worry… the list could go on. Let’s focus in this ABIDE on our Savior and Rescuer, King Jesus.
Prayers of Thanksgiving
“I called to the Lord in my distress, and I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.” (Psalm 18:6)
Take a moment to thank the Lord that He is a God who listens and responds to our prayers and cries for help. Recall the faithfulness of God and thank Him for the rescue He has provided in past situations/circumstances.
Prayer: God, thank you for rescuing me when _____________________ (fill in the blank with how God provided rescue for you in the past situations/circumstances).
Prayers for Steadfastness
“He makes my feet like hinds feet able to stand firmly and tread safely on paths of testing and trouble; He sets me securely upon my high places.” (Psalm 18:33 – Amplified Version)
God will encircle us with strength, security and stability, even when the path we are traveling on is unsteady and at times even dangerous. Where do you need His strength? Where do you need Him to steady you? Do you feel off balance, insecure or off track?
Spend some time asking God to provide you with the strength, security and stability you need in any area of your life where you feel tested or troubled.
Prayer: God, I/we need your strength, security and stability in ________________ (fill in the blank with places in your life where you feel tested or troubled).
Prayers of Praise
“The Lord lives—blessed be my rock! The God of my salvation is exalted. Therefore, I will give thanks to you among the nations, Lord; I will sing praises about your name.” (Psalm 18:46,49)
Let’s end our ABIDE time by praising the Lord simply for who He is while we wait in expectation for what we have asked.
Prayer: Lord, we praise you because you are _____________________ (fill in the blank with an attribute of God or one of God’s names).
Closing Prayer: Lord, I praise you that you are alive and working both in me and all around me. Give me eyes of faith to see your power and glory in every situation I face. I choose to cling to You, my Rock and only place of safety and security. You are the God of my salvation and I exalt you as Lord over all! Fill me, Father, with songs of praise to You that drown out the noise and chaos surrounding me. God, use my life to point others to You, so that they too will cling to you as both Savior and Rescuer. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
