ABIDE Prayer: Spiritual Battles
The purpose of ABIDE is to seek God through prayer, rely on the Spirit as we gather together, and pray with unity and purpose. ABIDE prayers are Scripture-led and Spirit-focused prayers.
God uses prayer to reveal Himself to us, heal us and free us. God gives us wisdom and direction through prayer. God comforts our hearts and transforms us through prayer. God uses intercessory prayer to do a powerful work in others’ lives. And prayer is the means to fighting spiritual battles.
“Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens” (Ephesians 6:10-12).
Spiritual battles are unseen battles fought in the spiritual realm through prayer. As God’s children, we are targets for the enemy on a daily basis. To experience victory in spiritual battles we must use the spiritual weapons God gave us when we entered into a relationship with Him.
Scripture tells us in Colossians 1:13, “He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.” As God’s children, we have already been rescued from the enemy. When we encounter spiritual battles, we are fighting from a position of victory.
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).
Prayers of Thanksgiving
Take a few moments and thank God for rescuing you from the domain of darkness and giving you victory because He loves you.
Prayers for Freedom
The enemy knows that Jesus rescued us from his domain of darkness, so he lies to us in an attempt to make us feel like we are defeated. Scripture tells us the enemy is “a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44b). Let’s ask God to set us free from believing those lies.
God, set us free from believing the lie that we are _____________________________ (fill in the blank with lies the enemy tells us to make us feel defeated).
Prayers for Victory
The way we view spiritual battles impacts how we pray. We need to fix our thoughts on the truth of what God says in His Word.
Scripture tells us:
“You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
“In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 10:16).
“Look, I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing at all will harm you” (Luke 10:19).
God, we put our trust in you and your power to give us victory over ______________________ (fill in the blank with places in our lives, families, community and nation where we need God’s strength and power to give us victory).
Closing Prayer:
God, thank you that as we walk through life and experience spiritual battles, you are always with us. Thank you for the promise of eternal life with you and the glorious assurance that one day there will be no more battles. Help us stand firm daily in the truth that we are victorious through Christ. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
