Abide Prayer: Humility
The purpose of ABIDE is to seek God through prayer, rely on the Spirit as we gather together, and pray with unity and purpose. ABIDE prayers are Scripture-led and Spirit-focused prayers.
“Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even to death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:5,8)
Let’s look to Jesus as our example in selfless humility and ask Him to grant us this same attitude.
Prayer: God, thank you for providing us the ultimate example of humility in your Son Jesus. In a world where we are encouraged to put ourselves first, it is our desire every day to be conformed to His image and walk in humility in our relationship with You and others.
Prayers of Praise
“For I (Jesus) have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you.” (John 13:15)
Let’s begin by praising the Lord for Jesus’ model of a life of humility as seen over and over in the scriptures and for the power of Christ in us as believers to live our lives in the very same way.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for showing me/us what true humility is; I praise you for the new life your selfless humility has provided me. I am especially thankful for ____________________ (fill in the blank with one of the many blessings you have received as a result of Christ’s humble sacrifice).
Prayers of Confession
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3)
Take a moment with the help of the Holy Spirit to examine your own heart and confess any lack of humility or selfishness that you may have struggled with recently.
Prayer: Father, I confess my need for a Christ-like humility in the area of ___________________ (fill in the blank with any situation/circumstance where you need God to grant you humility).
Prayers of Declaration
“For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— in heaven and on earth and under the earth— and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)
Prayer: God, it is my heart’s desire that Christ be exalted as Lord in every area my life. I humble myself and submit all I hold dear to be used for your glory. Bring honor and glory to your name through _________________ (fill in the blank with specific places in your life where you desire Christ to be magnified).
Closing Prayer
Jesus, I look to you as my example in selfless humility. I pray that you will clothe me each and every day with an attitude of Christ-like humility and help me regard others as more important than myself. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
